Innsbruck holidays

With vibrant pastel buildings and ornate Gothic palaces, Innsbruck could have been plucked straight from a film set. Add a youthful student population that keeps its bars busy, a dash of funky-looking award-winning architecture and cradle it all in mountains and you’ll soon see why this city is the jewel of the Austrian Alps.

A city-to-slopes adventure

Innsbruck’s picturesque centre contains cobbled lanes, medieval houses and rococo palaces with icing-like decorations. Marvel at the sparkling world made of Swarovski crystals or refuel on cheese dumplings before hitting the slopes for some world-class skiing.

You only have to hop onto the Zaha Hadid-designed Hungerburg Funicular or climb into a cable car to rise above the city and into an alpine paradise. For half the year, Innsbruck is the winter sports capital of Europe – but in summer it becomes a completely different world: wildflowers bloom in alpine meadows and the mountains become your playground: hit the chairlifts for a day of paragliding, mountain biking or hiking. Book your flights to Innsbruck and begin your adventure in the Nordkette mountain range.

Innsbruck holiday FAQs

  1. The Chamber of Art and Curiosities is one of the oldest museums in the world. You’ll find cabinets rammed with curiosities including the only glass bell piano of its kind, a stuffed shark and some death figurines.
  2. Discover a summertime floral fiesta at Austria’s highest botanical garden situated by the Patscherkofel cable car station, 2000 metres up. Expect to find edelweiss, exotic flora and in June, a whole carpet of purple flowers.
  3. The incredible Zaha Hadid-designed Bergisel ski jump has a cafe at the top where you can take in wraparound views of Innsbruck and the surrounding mountains. If you’re here in January, watch ski jumpers fly down the jump during the Four Hills Tournament.
  4. Take a stroll along Innsbruck’s promenade. Imbibe concerts at the courtyard of the Gothic Imperial Palace before stepping inside to discover its overwhelming opulence from Renaissance art, intricate frescos and marbled surfaces.
  5. Explore the Old Town to see hallmarks of the Hapsburg Empire, from pastel-coloured buildings to its gilt-tiled Golden Roof (built in 1500 for the wedding of Emperor Maximilian I). Maybe stop for a coffee on Innsbruck’s most famous street, Maria-Theresien-Strasse.
  6. Innsbruck offers many cycling routes ranging from virtually flat to thigh-challenging steep climbs, all of which will reward you with breathtaking views. You can view the options on Tyrol’s interactive map.
  7. Experience some old-fashioned thigh-slapping fun at a Tyrolean evening complete with traditional dancing, cowbell ringing, yodelling and plenty of laughts thrown in.

  • You can access the most far-flung and exciting resorts from Innsbruck using the SKI plus CITY ski pass. It covers high-altitude Kuhtai which is great for its varied slopes. If you’re after somewhere snow sure then head to the Stubai Valley, taking in the Schlick 2000 ski area which sits just above Fulpmes. Here you’ll find the Stubai Glacier where you can ski from autumn to spring.
  • The market town of Wattens is where you’ll find one of Austria’s most-loved exports. The fantasy Swarovski Crystal Worlds covers 7.5 hectares and includes a cloud made from 800,000 crystals, a labyrinth, art installations and a crystal winterscape designed by Alexander McQueen.
  • Innsbruck’s fashionable neighbour, Kitzbuhel, boasts decent hair-raising downhills. It’s a chic alpine town that sits at the foot of the formidable Hahnenkamm mountain, the site of a thrilling downhill ski race. It’s perfect for expert and intermediate skiers and in summer offers hiking and biking.
  • Nearby is upmarket St Anton, a village with a quaint centre and handsome onion-domed church. It’s also considered the birthplace of modern skiing and is well regarded for its steep and challenging terrain.
  • About half an hour by train from Innsbruck is Seefeld, with its traffic-free streets and trendy eateries. It’s a popular base for a cosmopolitan crowd and has a town centre packed with shops and bars all wrapped in extremely scenic surroundings. At night it boasts floodlit slopes, while the area also offers winter hiking.

  • You know when you have snow, twinkling fairy lights, brass bands and the smell of Kiachln (hot doughnuts laced with Sauerkraut) that it’s Christmas time in Innsbruck. This city is spoilt for choice with six Christmas markets to enjoy running from mid-November to late December.
  • For half the year, the city becomes one of Europe’s winter sports capitals. With a free shuttle bus to nearby cable cars, you have immediate access to nine ski resorts near Innsbruck. It’s little wonder it’s played host to two Winter Olympic Games.
  • The city has two ski areas immediately on its outskirts and several others within easy reach which you can get to using the local SKI plus CITY pass, giving you 111 lifts and more than 300km of slopes. Innsbruck’s own ski area is Nordkette, which has challenging runs close to the city. Meanwhile, connections from the city to the slopes is easy thanks to a mountain railway that takes you from the city up to the award-winning, Zaha Hadid-designed Hungerburg cable car station, which whisks you onto the steeps.

There’s something deeply satisfying about a weekend on the slopes – it’s short enough to ski and party hard, but long enough to blow the cobwebs away.
