Israel’s cool capital of culture

With one foot in the Middle East and the other dangling in the inviting waters of the Med, Tel Aviv affords visitors a unique mix of both. Israel’s commercial, cultural and culinary capital is hot, noisy and hedonistic - yet simultaneously self-confident and cultured.

Enjoy a leisurely stroll or bike ride along the Tayelet. Fringed by Old Jaffa to the south and skyscrapers to the north, the promenade is the ideal place to watch local life unfold. Visit the Museum of the History of Tel Aviv-Yafo, housed in the former Town Hall, for multimedia exhibits covering all aspects of the city’s century of history. For shopping swing by the Dizengoff Centre on the lively street of the same name. It was Israel’s first shopping mall and is something of a ‘city within a city’. Check out the buzzing Habima Square, which has a unique sunken garden in the middle. Then call in at the Sarona Market, a massive culinary centre housing food shops from across the globe where you can feast on everything from Dutch cheese to Asian buns.

Take a dip in the Mediterranean at one of the city’s prime beaches, including the family-friendly Gordon Beach, the more youth oriented Frishman Beach and Israel’s main water sports complex Surf Point, offering windsurfing, kayaking and kite surfing. Few cities rival Tel Aviv when it comes to nightlife. Whether you’re after an artfully mixed cocktail at 3am, a 24-hour eatery, spaces for live music or an all-night party in a club, there’s no shortage of options to while away a spirited night out. Book your flights to Tel Aviv today and start exploring.

Tel Aviv holiday FAQs

  1. HaYarkon Park is Tel Aviv’s answer to Central Park and the perfect place to escape from the city’s bustle. The Yarkon River runs through it to the north of the city and the park is always packed with joggers, cyclists, dog walkers and strollers. Explore the Rock Garden and Tropical Garden and maybe catch a concert as the park hosts performances by a raft of world-famous acts.
  2. Wander around the compact historic enclave of Jaffa. Perched on a cliff overlooking the city, Jaffa is one of the world’s oldest ports offering narrow streets, cobblestone alleyways, great shopping and art galleries, plus Ottoman-era attractions such as the Clock Tower and St Peter's Church, and many historic houses. Stop by the Wishing Bridge festooned with zodiac signs. There’s also an interesting and eclectic flea market to explore.
  3. Carmel Market, AKA Shuk HaCarmel, is Tel Aviv’s largest and is stuffed to the gunwales with stalls selling spices, fresh fruit, pickled veggies, meat, fish, household goods, fabrics, flowers and more. Here the goods are piled high and the prices are kept low. Enjoy bartering with vendors in this Middle Eastern-flavoured bazaar and grab a bite at one of the market’s many fast-food outlets.
  4. The Tel Aviv Museum of Art is the country’s oldest and possibly the best. Leading Israeli artists are well represented of course, alongside many international names covering numerous art movements including Cezanne, Kandinsky, Chagall, Rodin, Picasso and Dali, but it’s particularly strong on the Impressionists and Post-Impressionists. A striking ‘envelope design’ extension was made to the building in 2011 making it a key draw for fans of modern architecture.
  5. Tel Aviv is one of the world’s leading centres of Bauhaus architecture earning it a slot on the World Heritage list. The 4,000-odd buildings that make up the area known as the ‘White City’ were mostly built in the 1930s and exhibit simplicity and function in their design. To learn more about them and the art movement that spawned them, pop into the Bauhaus Centre.
  • Neve Tzedek is one of the city’s oldest areas is now perhaps the most exclusive, sitting just outside of the city centre. A mishmash of architectural styles lend the place a distinctly quirky, villagey vibe. Stroll down its main street Shabazi, which is lined with designer boutiques, artists’ ateliers and gourmet eateries and see why this ‘hood is seeing soaring house prices.
  • Once a major industrial district, Florentin is now perhaps Tel Aviv’s trendiest area. Its bohemian atmosphere is largely down to an influx of artists and musicians who flocked here in the 1980s. The streets here are adorned with murals and street art, while a popular ‘90s TV show set here called Florentin brought the area to the attention of a new wave of hipsters. Today, it plays host to tattoo parlours, art galleries, nightclubs, bars and gourmet restaurants.
  • Lev Ha’ir sits right in the heart of the city housing most of Tel Aviv’s cultural big hitters, including some 4,000 Bauhaus buildings, the Museum of Art, Carmel Market and Habima, an early Hebrew arts centre. Swanky Rothschild Boulevard is well worth a stroll. The city’s thriving start-up scene is found here too, with skyscrapers jostling for position among the more historic buildings.
  • If you’re looking for somewhere a little quieter, the historic enclave of the Yemenite Quarter, (also called Kerem) could be a good bet. It’s considerably less touristy than most areas and owes its heritage to waves of Yemeni immigrants who arrived in the late 19th Century. As a result, you’ll find plenty of tempting traditional Yemenite restaurants here, including the renowned hummus joint Shlomo and Doron. Elsewhere you’ll find the Nachalat Binyamin pedestrian mall which hosts craft fairs and street performers.
  • Just south of Florentin, Shapira is an up-and-coming neighbourhood that’s been largely untouched by gentrification so far. In recent years the area has seen the opening of scores of galleries and studios. One of the most celebrated venues is Artspace Tel Aviv, a non-profit contemporary gallery and teaching space that’s seen the area’s stock rise among creative types. You won’t find many chain stores here and it’s also a key hotspot for boutique shopping and multicultural dining in the city, from Bukharian (Central Asian Jewish) kosher restaurant Hanan Margilan to the Chinese flavours of Xing Long.
