Tokyo holidays
Take in Japan’s futuristic megacapital – the robot cafes, the 3D characters leaning out of billboards, the convenience store sandwiches cut into perfect right-angles and the bullet trains that streak past Mount Fuji in the distance. Then look into the city’s past. Look for vermilion torii gates leading to sloping-roofed temples and tiny izakayas cloaked in the glow of paper lanterns. Look for holes in the walls serving bowls of chewy udon noodles and plates of sushi dotted with dollops of wasabi. Tokyoites love to seek out new trends, but they also savour time-tested traditions

Tokyo holiday FAQs
- See Japanese art and artefacts at the Tokyo National Museum. From curved samurai swords to kimonos embroidered with wandering snowflakes, the thousands of intricate items on display at Japan’s oldest museum are mesmerising. There’s a lot to take in here – start at the Japanese Gallery for a good overview. The museum is in Ueno Park, beyond the cherry trees that fan out over the sakura avenue.
- Get geeky in Akihabara. This central district is a whizz-kid’s paradise, featuring dizzying lights and billboard-plastered buildings. Find shops filled with advanced electronics and retro gaming memorabilia. Alternatively, navigate the labyrinth of Nakano Broadway: a shopping centre full of otaku goods such as glossy trading cards.
- Experience Tokyo nightlife. Visit Golden Gai in Shinjuku to wander its neon-lit alleyways and pop into tiny bars that can barely sit five people. For a swish nightcap, slip into one of the city’s famed mixology dens to see bar tenders showing off tricks like ice carving. Step into one of the city’s karaoke booths to belt your heart out at any time. There’s no ballad too cheesy.
- Tower above the clouds at Tokyo Skytree. Stand on one of the two observation decks in this 634-metre-tall tower for views that stretch far and wide – on clear days you can even spy Mount Fuji. Visit around sunset to see the metropolis soaked in gold light the colour of Japanese whisky. Alternatively, head to Shibuya Sky for its open-air observation deck on the rooftop of Shibuya Scramble Square.
- Visit Tokyo’s immersive theme parks. Find a turreted castle and buckets of whimsy at Tokyo Disneyland. At Tokyo DisneySea – the only Disney park of its kind – you can ride rollercoasters designed for adults and discover Fantasy Springs. Ghibli Park near Tokyo is also hugely popular. Not really into Disney or Studio Ghibli? Experience mind-boggling VR rides at Tokyo Joypolis on Odaiba island instead. This indoor park is one of the best Odaiba attractions.
- Think outside of the frame at a teamLab digital art museum. TeamLab Borderless in Azabudai Hills is filled with guests reaching for their reflections in glittering globes and watching projected art wash over them. TeamLab Planets in Toyosu is smaller but offers a more tactile experience – you can wade through water as digital koi swim around you, smell 10,000 real orchids in a ‘floating flower garden’ and step into a ‘soft black hole’.
- Find moments of quiet reflection at Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines. Senso-ji temple in Asakusa, the oldest temple in the city, and Meiji Shrine in Harajuku, surrounded by forest and featuring an iconic wall of kanji-covered sake barrels, are easily two of the best things to see in Tokyo. Remember to be respectful when visiting religious sites and learn local customs. For example, when you walk through a torii gate you should avoid the centre.
- Shibuya is beyond buzzing. Whether you’re sat in a rooftop bar looking down at the Shibuya Scramble – that carefully choreographed crossing of suit-clad businessmen and bag-laden shoppers at what must be the world’s busiest junction – or stood on a streetcorner staring up at a 3D billboard, you’re bound to be wide-eyed. Stay here to see iconic modern Tokyo sights and experience some of the best nightlife in the city.
- Harajuku is always in style, its streets paraded by Tokyoites showing off their candy-coloured kawaii outfits and elaborately arranged accessories. Stay here for fun days filled with shopping and trend-spotting. Check out high-street fashion brands on Takeshita Street and look for designer goods on Omotesando boulevard, stopping to fuel up with a creme-brulee-filled crepe when you need a break.
- Ginza has plenty of luxury Tokyo hotels posing among its skyscrapers. Featuring luxury department stores where the air seems to be perfumed with designer scents and fine-dining restaurants where wagyu and sushi melt like butter in your mouth, this district is the place to stay for a taste of Tokyo’s high life. Splurge on capsule wardrobe pieces at the massive Ginza Six mall or treat yourself to a new watch at the landmark Wako shopping complex.
- Shinjuku always goes big. Think huge billboards and a bellowing Godzilla atop a tower. See cherry trees in Shinjuku Central Park and enter the polka-dotted world of one of Japan’s most beloved modern artists at the Yayoi Kusama Museum. When evening dawns, drink in the glow of lanterns in Golden Gai or immerse yourself in a themed bar. If you’re looking for a lively LGBTQ+ scene, the Ni-chome neighbourhood has you covered.
- Asakusa has Tokyo’s oldest temple at its centre. Wondering where to stay in Tokyo for culture? This is the place. Enter Senso-ji’s complex through Thunder Gate, walking beneath a colossal red lantern, and stop at stalls selling kokeshi dolls and red bean cakes before admiring the five-storied pagoda and Main Hall. See modern marvels, too – Skytree branches into the clouds on the other side of Sumida River, which is crossed by bottlenosed waterbuses.
- If you’re looking to go big in Japan, check out our five-star hotels in Tokyo. The Peninsula Tokyo boasts some of the most spacious rooms in the city. This lantern-shaped hotel stands opposite the Imperial Palace and is super sleek with its gleaming Rolls Royce cars and marble floors.
- There are plenty of luxury hotels in Tokyo to choose from, and The Tokyo Edition Toranomon is a great option if an immense city view is high up on your list of priorities. All of the guestrooms boast city skyline views and some even feature private terraces.
- Gracery Ginza Hotel is ideally located for cheap Tokyo holidays filled with tonnes of only-in-Japan experiences. Stay at this modern and comfortable hotel to be close to top attractions like the Tokyo Tower and Kabukiza Theatre.
- Tokyo city breaks can be all go, go, go, so the luscious gardens of Chinzanso Tokyo in the uptown area of Mejiro are a welcome retreat at the end of a long day spent exploring. Go from skyscrapers to spring cherry blossoms, summer fireflies or a ‘sea of clouds’ floating around trees.
- Andaz Tokyo Toranomon Hills is a sophisticated setting for spa holidays in Tokyo. The spa itself features five treatment rooms, an aquatic area and a fitness centre with views of the Imperial Palace. Book the Jet Lag Refresh massage for a post-flight boost to start your holiday.
