Sardinia holidays
Sardinia holidays offer up an evocative combination – the history, cuisine and culture of Italy, with the colour and North African flavour of nearby Tunisia. The pristine quality of its beach life could rival any tropical island while the unspoilt nature of its wild interior means it offers up exotic flora and fauna.

Sardinia holiday FAQs
- Visit the ancient village of Tiscali. Situated in mountaintop caves in the Valle di Lanaittu, the ruins of the village date back to the 6th Century BC and survived the Roman era. Tiscali was only discovered during the late 19th Century before looters made light work of its contents, but despite this the stone foundations of conical huts set among holm oak and turpentine trees is still an impressive sight. Hire a local guide to navigate the often-steep and challenging hike to the site.
- Anyone visiting Sardinia will want to discover its many nuraghes, ancient stone towers built between the Bronze and Iron ages. The best example of these is the Nuraghe Su Nuraxi, Sardinia’s only UNESCO World Heritage Site. Surrounded by rich greenery, the focal point is the central tower built in 1500 BC when it stood alone. This is flanked by a series of circular interlocking Iron Age structures which dot the hillside – some were still inhabited in Roman times. The site was only rediscovered in 1949.
- Sardinia is justly renowned for its beaches and one of the best is Cala Goloritze. Look out for the striking limestone outcrops at its southern end. The principle one Monte Caroddi, also known as the Aguglia, is a 148-metre-high needle of rock that attracts daredevil climbers. You can reach it via a boat trip or by hiking the stunning 3.5km Cala Goloritze Trail from the Altopiano del Golgo. Arrive early in the morning before this small beach packs out.
- Arguably Sardinia’s most dramatic gorge is the Gola Su Gorropu, whose limestone walls are up to 500 metres high. You can hike here from the Rio Flumineddu riverbed among hefty boulders without any climbing gear for a kilometre before you reach the narrowest point at the mighty Hotel Supramonte, whose 400-metre sheer rockface challenges climbers. Flora and fauna you can spot along the way include the endemic Aquilegia nuragica plant, mouflon wild sheep and even golden eagles.
- The Spiaggia della Pelosa is easily one of the island’s most spectacular beaches. Located just a few miles north of Stintino, the idyllic beach comprises a thin white strip of sand that disappears into shallow, turquoise waters, all framed by odd stretches of almost lunar-like land. Look out to sea for views of an Aragonese watchtower and craggy Isola Piana. The beach packs out in summer but during the rest of the year windsurfers and kitesurfers flock here to take advantage of the maestrale winds.
- Sardinia beach holidays often begin with flights to Olbia, a major port city which sits close to the glitzy Emerald Coast. Olbia itself is wonderfully authentic and has more to offer than first meets the eye. Its historic old town is overflowing with rustic wine bars and cafe-filled piazzas, along with interesting boutiques and impressive sites – including the Basilica of San Simplicio. On the palm-lined waterfront you’ll find The Olbia Archaeological Museum, housing precious artefacts from Roman warships, while the ancient Nuraghe Riu Mulinu is perched on a hilltop just outside the city. Once you have explored Olbia’s top attractions, head to the dreamy white-sand beaches on Sardinia’s north east coast.
- Famed for its brilliant green-blue waters, the Emerald Coast is Sardinia’s most exclusive holiday destination. Its sun-drenched coastline stretches on for miles, punctuated by picture-perfect bays, sheltered coves, yacht-filled marinas and ultra-glamorous Sardinia beach resorts. Relax in style in Porto Cervo, a playground for international jetsetters. For a quieter holiday, venture to Liscia di Vacca to snorkel in clear waters, or travel to charming Capriccioli, where huge granite rocks and craggy mountains border ravishing beaches.
- Set just off the Emerald Coast, the peaceful Maddalena Archipelago is one of Sardinia’s most unexplored destinations. Its seven islands and many deserted islets are located between Corsica and north east Sardinia, promising heavenly beaches and turquoise lagoons, barely touched by tourism. The main island, La Maddalena, is renowned for its gorgeous sun-baked beaches and bustling centre where you’ll find boutiques, cafes and waterside restaurants. A bridge connects La Maddalena to Caprera island, where you can swim in translucent seas and traverse wild hiking trails. You can only reach the other islands by boat, most of which remain uninhabited.
- On the southern coast of Sardinia, Chia brings you Caribbean-worthy beaches, scenic hiking trails and crystal-clear waters. Explorers can hike through verdant pine forests, while water sports enthusiasts surf, snorkel and sail in the Mediterranean Sea. Meanwhile, those simply looking to relax have a fantastic choice of beaches, most of which have shallow waters, making this destination ideal for Sardinia family holidays. See the natural sand dunes on Bell Dune Beach, look out for wild flamingos on Su Giudeu Beach and sunbathe in bliss on the crescent-shaped Chia Beach.
- Sardinia is best known for its mystical Mediterranean coves – and those along the Gulf of Orosei are no exception. The gulf sprawls along the east coast of Sardinia, magnificently bordered by the mighty Supramonte mountains. Breathtaking bays such as Cala Goloritze Cala Luna and Cala Mariolu are only accessible via boat or walking trail, making this destination a hiker’s haven. Take a boat out to Cala Mariolu or stroll along the endless powdery sands of Su Barone. Snorkel around the gorgeous grottos of Cala Luna Beach and discover Cala Osalla, a natural paradise for divers.
- Alghero’s medieval centre is one of the best preserved on the island. Encircled by ancient stone walls, its historic old town remains an energetic enclave with cobblestone streets, pretty palazzi and buzzing piazzas. The most notable attraction is the gothic Alghero Cathedral, where you can climb the lofty bell tower to peer down on the city. You can also browse boutique shops in the Carlo Alberto shopping district, and stop by the grand 14th Century San Francesco Church. Outside the city walls, boats gently bob in the marina, while Alghero is an ideal base for exploring the string of stunning beaches on the surrounding Riviera del Corallo.
- A popular summer holiday destination, Villasimius offers sensational scenery, magnificent white-sand beaches and a central town with excellent Mediterranean restaurants. If you’re staying in the charming town itself, you’ll be well placed to explore Sardinia’s southern coastline, including Costa Rei’s beaches, the Stagno di Notteri lagoon and the Marine Protected Area of Capo Carbonara. Besides its incredible dive sites, the Capo Carbonara area also boasts secluded bays, seagrass meadows and dramatic clifftop hiking trails that curve along the coast.
- With its impeccable beaches, fine-dining hotspots and vibrant night scene, Porto Cervo continues to attract those looking for a luxury Sardinia holiday. Known as the seaside capital of the Emerald Coast, Porto Cervo is popular with the rich and famous who often flock to its yacht-lined marina during the summer. During your stay, shop at designer stores along Promenade du Port, tee off at the nearby Pevero Golf Club and visit Chiesa di Stella Maris to witness some of the best views across the marina. The town’s surrounding beaches invite you to relax in the daytime, and there’s a plethora of bars, restaurants and nightclubs that stay open late into the evening.
- Cagliari, the alluring capital of Sardinia, offers plenty of diversions with its countless historic attractions, lively seafront marina and long stretch of beach. Cultural enthusiasts can spend time exploring museums, medieval churches and the hilltop Castello quarter, while sun worshippers should head east to Poetto Beach, which extends four miles beyond the Promontorio di Sant’Elia. You can also visit pretty Pula, around 18 miles south west of Cagliari, where you’ll be close to numerous beaches and the ancient city of Nora, one of the island’s most important archaeological sites.
- Go all-inclusive in Sardinia with a stay at Sentido Orosei Beach, a quiet oasis set within Marina Resort complex, surrounded by 23 hectares of gardens, lawns and orchards. There’s also a quiet, sandy beach reached via a charming wooden bridge.
- Looking for beach hotels in Sardinia? Look no further than Forte Village Resort – Hotel Castello. This hotel offers a host of amenities in a secluded Sardinian setting. Take your pick from Forte Village Resort’s 21 restaurants and nine swimming pools, alongside 116 acres of gardens to explore, or pamper yourself in the vast spa.
- Perhaps you’re searching for luxury hotels in Sardinia? Romazzino - A Belmond Hotel - Costa Smeralda has you covered. The area is blessed with a stunning turquoise bay and some of the best golden, sandy beaches on the island. First-rate facilities here include two outdoor pools, a tennis court and extensive water sports.
- On the hunt for cheap holidays to Sardinia? Check out Lantana Resort. This quiet hotel near the traditional village of Pula runs a free shuttle to the beach and golf course. Top up your tan by the large outdoor pool or perhaps indulge with a relaxing spa treatment.
- Some wonderful Sardinian family holidays can be enjoyed at Resort & SPA Le Dune, a collection of five hotels catering for a wide range of travel preferences.
